Philosophy
Many behavior problems result from a dog that is not receiving what it needs to be calm and content. Although training is a very large part because it creates communication, it is equally important that your dog gets the exercise he needs, a safe living environment, and positive attention for good behavior. This is why it is essential that the whole family learn what their particular dog needs, in addition to learning how to train the dog.
Exercise
To create a healthy relationship with your dog, you must fulfill his exercise needs on a daily basis. Exercise needs vary from dog to dog, and it is not always breed determined. High energy dogs may need 3 or more hours a day of exercise, while low energy dogs may be satisfied with a daily 45 minute walk. So the saying goes “a tired dog is a good dog”.
Training
All dogs thrive in an environment with daily consistent structure. They need to know their place in the pack and training opens up the line of communication between the dog and the people. This doesn't mean that you have to be giving your dog commands at all times. It means that through the use of training commands, you ask your dog to work for the things he wants and to calm down at times of excitement. Self control for the dog and respect for you the leader creates a healthy relationship. The training should become a way of living with your dog. The majority of dogs are born followers and once you take the leadership role, those dogs relax and become content.
Management
Dogs by nature live in the moment and are opportunists. This is when bad habits such as stealing food off the counter, potty accidents in the house, or destructive behavior can occur. If you are unable to educate and influence your dog, then give him a dog proof space with appropriate toys, so that he does not self educate himself and learn bad habits. Dogs require more down time during the day than people, so no need to feel guilty. Having a small quiet space is relaxing for a dog. Setting your dog up for success is your job.
Affection and Rewards
The most rewarding part of owning a dog is giving him those belly rubs and things he loves. This is why we own dogs! It brings us and the dog pleasure. If exercise, training, and management are accomplished, then your dog is much more likely to be earning extra affection. A good dog gets more praise than one that is constantly getting into trouble!
